Raking up the issue of Vinod Adani, Gautam Adani's brother, who was named in the Panama Papers and the Pandora Papers, the Congress on Sunday asked the government what happened to its strong stance against economic offenders that it elucidated on several platforms. Darting three questions to the government amid the Adani crisis, the Congress said, "You and your government cannot hide from -- saying Hum Adani ke Hain Kaun."
Parliament sessions for the last few days witnessed uproar as the Congress demanded a court-monitored probe or a joint parliamentary committee investigation. On the concerns of SBI, LIC, PNB's investment into Adani, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said they all have issued statements confirming that their exposure to Adani stocks has been within permitted limit.
Amid the ongoing political row, the Congress on Sunday asked why no central agency has not yet investigated the allegations against the Adani Group when Vinod Adani, the brother of Gautam Adan, was named in the Panama Papers and the Pandora Papers as someone who operates offshore entities in the Bahamas and the British Virgin Islands.
"He (Vinod Adani) is alleged to have engaged in 'brazen stock manipulation; and 'accounting fraud' via a vast labyrinth of offshore shell entities'. What does the fact that a business entity you are well acquainted with faces serious allegations tell us about the quality and sincerity of your investigations?" the Congress said.
"What action has been taken, if ever, to investigate the serious allegations made over the years against the Adani Group? Is there any hope of a fair and impartial investigation under you?" -- This is the second question of the Congress.
"How is it possible that one of India's largest business groups, one that has been allowed to build monopolies in airports and seaports, could have escaped serious scrutiny for so long despite persistent allegations? Other business groups have been harassed and raided for much less. Was the Adani Group essential to a dispensation that has profitted from 'anti-corruption' rhetoric all these years?" -- is the third question.
